Errata
Chapter 2 - The Basics
Jeff Crerie pointed out that the diagram in the Balanced Cables side bar is incorrect. Take it away, Jeff:
"There appears to be a small error in the diagram on p. 66.
On the bottom row of the diagram (the negative signal), the noise spike squiggle should be reversed of what is drawn in both B and C.
In B, the noise spike should be of identical phase to the one on the top row, since it is picked up identically albeit on the negative signal.
Then in C, once the polarity of the negative wire is reversed, the spike should be of opposite phase to the one on the positive wire, so that when they are added back together it goes away. The way the diagram exists, if you add the waveforms in C as they are drawn, the noise spike would actually double in size instead of getting cancelled out.
This may seem like a very minor point, and in fact it is. However, if people who have no experience with balanced cables are to have any hope of understanding them instead of shrugging their shoulders and moving on, the proper depiction of that little squiggle could make all the difference. "
I couldn't have said it better myself, so thanks Jeff. I'll endevaor to get this fixed in the second printing.
